Professor of Practice (Open Rank) - Systems Engineering
About The University of Texas at El Paso:
The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) and its access and excellence mission are redefining public higher education not only in Texas, but also across the nation. In December 2018, the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education designated UTEP as an R1 research university. Meanwhile, the University also has earned national recognition as a leader in how best to serve first-generation, Hispanic students and improve their social mobility.
Since opening its doors along the U.S.-Mexico border in 1914 as the Texas State School of Mines and Metallurgy, UTEP has enabled generations of students to pursue their goals through higher education in one of the world's largest binational communities. Over the past century, the University's enrollment has grown from 27 mining students to more than 25,000 undergraduate and graduate students, and that number increases annually. In addition, the faculty at UTEP are considered some of the nation's happiest people, according to one author who traveled the country by Greyhound bus to research happiness.
The University invests $91 million in research annually which ranks the University among the top 200 universities in the nation. More than $44 million of this is in federal research spending, which ranks fourth among all Texas public universities. UTEP maintains an operating budget of $450 million and employs approximately 4,000 people. UTEP offers a broad array of degree programs - 74 bachelor's, 74 master's, and 22 doctorates - taught by outstanding faculty who have been recognized for their commitment to student success.
The quality of UTEP's faculty members and their sustained commitment to excellence are reflected in the University's strong record of receiving extremely competitive grant awards, while also maintaining an academic environment dedicated to addressing the educational needs of students, many of whom are the first in their families to attend college.
About the City:
El Paso's active arts and culture community features the state's longest running symphony orchestra, a nationally recognized chamber music festival, art galleries, museums, and a full schedule of seasonal events and festivals. UTEP adds to the arts and entertainment scene with an award-winning dinner theater, music and dance productions, contemporary and student art galleries, and a natural history museum.
For sports fans, the UTEP Miners offer exciting Division I-A college athletics at several campus venues: Sun Bowl Stadium, the Don Haskins Center, Kidd Field, University Field and the Helen of Troy Softball Complex. Southwest University Park, located a mile away in lively downtown El Paso, is home to the El Paso Chihuahuas, the Triple-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres, and the El Paso Locomotive, a professional soccer team founded in 2019.
About the Department:
The Department of Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering (http://imse.utep.edu) consists of seven faculty members specializing in operations research, reliability and maintainability, systems engineering, quality engineering, supply chain management, human factors, and sustainability engineering. The Department offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering and Master of Science degrees in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, and Systems Engineering. The department participates in several interdisciplinary Ph.D. programs in the College of Engineering (COE) and is developing an interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in Industrial and Systems Engineering. Current departmental enrollment includes 305 undergraduates and 96 graduate students. Research expenditures last year were nearly $2.5 million.
Over the past three years, the department has experienced the fastest research expenditures growth in the COE through major grants/contracts with USDA, DoEd, DHS, NSF and NIST and LMC-Aeronautics. The increase in research expenditures indicates the IMSE faculty commitment to research in the strategic COE areas of Sustainability, Manufacturing, Infrastructure Systems, and Energy Systems. The Department is closely affiliated with the Research Institute for Manufacturing and Engineering Systems (http://rimes.utep.edu/) and Texas Manufacturing Assistance Center (TMAC) (http://tmac.utep.edu/), which have strong relationships with local manufacturing companies as well as industrial and government partners.
Recently, the IMSE Dept. and AT&T collaborated to offer a master of science in Systems Engineering to AT&T employees. In addition, the department has ongoing collaborations with local school districts, hospitals, international and national universities, and other UTEP departments. Excellent manufacturing and analytical research facilities exist within the College (http://engineering.utep.edu). The COE houses a national well-known Additive Manufacturing/Rapid Prototyping Systems Center (a.k.a. W.M. Keck Center), a satellite institution from "American Make," a class 100/1000 clean room for semiconductor, biomedical device, and MEMS fabrication.
