Job Description

The Mechanical Engineering (ME) Department at the University of Nevada, Reno seeks candidates for two (2) tenure-track faculty openings at the Assistant or Associate Professor level to support the development of the Aerospace Program. These tenure-track positions will be responsible for teaching, research and service responsibilities, as described below.

Based on the University's mission as a land grant institution, faculty duties will include undergraduate and graduate teaching, supervision of graduate students, performance of research, development of externally funded research projects, and university and professional service. With a recent $36M donation from the Gillemot Foundation ( https://www.unr.edu/nevada-today/news/2023/aerospace-engineering-program ), the department is set to expand its aerospace research and education, including the creation of comprehensive BS, MS, and PhD degree programs over the next two years. Currently, the department offers a minor in Aerospace Engineering, and these new faculty positions will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the program.

Required Qualifications **Candidates will be hired at the level that is comparable to experience
  • All applicants must have a Doctoral Degree in Aerospace Engineering or another closely related field.
  • Candidates whose specialization and interests complement existing research and instructional strengths in the department and affiliated programs will be preferred.


Preferred Qualifications
The two areas of interest are i) Propulsion and ii) Aerospace Structures and Materials. Candidates are sought with expertise in these two areas who can perform outstanding research and teach relevant AE and ME courses. Of particular interest are candidates with research that strongly contributes to the areas of Unmanned Aerial Systems or/and Space Exploration and Utilization. Although the positions are at the Assistant/Associate Professor level, exceptionally qualified candidates can be considered at a higher level. More positions in other AE areas will open the following year.

Department Information
Mechanical Engineering is a dynamic department within a rapidly growing R1 research university. The university recently completed a $14-million renovation of the Mechanical Engineering building in 2017, and the new $100-million William N. Pennington Engineering Building, which includes an ISO-5 (CLASS 100) cleanroom, in 2020. Departmental resources include access to the University's High Performance Computing facility, and a 5700 sq. ft. Aerospace Engineering Experimental Station secured in support of the Department's new aerospace engineering program. Reno is one of ten participants nationwide in the FAA's Unmanned Aircraft Systems Integration Pilot Program.
